A US Congressman and his wife have been charged with receiving bribes from foreign entities, according to the Justice Department.
The couple denies any wrongdoing but the department has laid down things very clearly and if convicted, they could face years in prison.
The democrat from Texas, congressman Henry Cuellar and his wife, received around $600,000 from Azerbaijan’s state-owned oil company and a bank in Mexico, the DOJ said in a statement.
Couple Denies Wrongdoing
In response to the allegations, Mr. Cuellar denied the allegations as baseless and said he is innocent.
“I want to be clear that both my wife and I are innocent of these allegations,” he added.
The DOJ claimed that the congressman received the money in exchange for influencing the US foreign policy in favor of Azerbaijan and to make changes to money-laundering laws in Mexico.
Mr. Cellular alleged that the actions he took were in the favor of the American public and in line with the conduct of his colleagues.
