Israeli lawmakers have passed a controversial bill despite strong opposition on the streets. The bill which is aimed at cutting down the powers of judiciary is seen as a threat to Israeli democracy by the Israeli people. The law will empower the parliament to strike down any rulings the parliament deems unreasonable.
Thousands On Streets
The proposed changes to judiciary by the Israeli parliament have sparked massive demonstrations, constituting some of the largest protests ever witnessed in the nation’s history. For over 29 weeks, Israeli citizens have been actively protesting against Netanyahu’s reform agenda. The initial surge of protests reached its peak in March, witnessing an impressive gathering of over half a million people in Tel Aviv. Demonstrators waved flags and passionately chanted slogans against the government.
More Laws To Come
Ofer Kassif, a member of Israel’s house of representatives, told Al Jazeera that the recent changes to law will turn Israel into a fascist dictatorship. “Other laws are expected [to pass] around the corner, and those are going to turn Israel into a fully-fledged fascist dictatorship,” Kassif said.
