Australian troops have been banned from drinking alcohol during military operations and exercises. The ban will be applied to all the Australian soldiers that are currently deployed or yet to be deployed both inside and outside the country.
The Brereton War Crimes Report
The order was imposed after multiple soldiers of Australian Defence Forces were found to be guilty of committing war crimes in Afghanistan between 2005-2019. The Brereton War Crimes Report was released back in 2020, which had detailed evidence of Australian soldiers accused of committing war crimes during their deployment in Afghanistan.
Why Ban The Alcohol?
Alcohol became controversial after graphic photos were released which showed Australian soldiers drinking alcohol in the prosthetic leg of one of the victims. Since then, alcohol has become a very controversial issue for the Australian Defense Forces.
