North Korea Tests AI-Assisted Torpedo System

By Mamoon Azeem
North Korea says tested AI-assisted torpedo system.

North Korea says it has tested a new artificial intelligence-powered torpedo.

Adding another weapon to its expanding arsenal as tensions rise across the Korean Peninsula.

State media reported Saturday that the Zam-2.0 underwater weapon uses AI to detect targets and guide itself more precisely.

The test took place Thursday, following Pyongyang’s recent submarine-launched cruise missile tests.

But what makes an AI-guided torpedo different?

Experts say the technology could help weapons distinguish genuine targets from decoys, making them harder to mislead.

Lim Eul-chul, a professor at Kyungnam University, told AFP that AI could improve a torpedo’s ability to identify real targets.

North Korea also claims to have conducted more than 180 tests of different kinds over five years.

Analysts suspect Russian assistance may be accelerating its weapons development.

This is potentially linked to Pyongyang’s military support for Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

Arms Race And Technical Challenges

The announcement comes amid an emerging arms race with South Korea, which recently tested its own hypersonic weapon.

Both countries are pursuing systems designed to evade detection and interception.

Meanwhile, speculation continues over a possible meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during Trump’s upcoming Asia tour.

Despite its claims, North Korea still faces technical challenges.

Experts note that high-speed torpedoes produce underwater noise, making them easier to detect.

The message from Pyongyang is clear: AI is becoming part of its military strategy.

The question is whether its latest claims reflect battlefield-ready technology or an effort to project strength.
