A Catholic priest has been killed and four other people injured in a knife attack at an abbey in south-east Poland, officials say.
A 31-year-old Ukrainian man has been arrested following the attack in Jarosław. Police are now investigating what drove the violence.
According to Polish media reports, the attacker first wounded a priest at a nearby cafe before entering the abbey grounds.
There, four more people were stabbed, and police said the victims included four men and one woman.
The murdered priest has not yet been publicly identified.
Polish leaders reacted strongly to the attack. President Karol Nawrocki said it had “shaken us all” and required a firm response.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the suspect would face “the full severity of Polish law”.
Ukraine Urges Restraint
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky also condemned the violence, saying, “We are shocked by this evil,” and called for a swift and thorough investigation.
The Ukrainian embassy in Poland urged people not to let the attack fuel hatred, stressing that responsibility should be determined “solely by the law”.
The incident comes amid occasional tensions between Polish citizens and Ukrainians, many of whom have sought refuge in Poland since Russia’s full-scale invasion.
For now, one crucial question remains unanswered: what triggered the attack?
