The move follows the dismissal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
His efforts to modernise Ukraine’s military and tackle corruption earned widespread praise.
Reports of tensions between Fedorov and Syrskyi had circulated for days before the leadership reshuffle confirmed them.
Drapatyi, 43, is viewed as a younger and more innovative commander.
Accepting the role, he pledged to work “with full focus” and thanked Syrskyi for strengthening the army.
Military Shake-Up Begins
Fedorov also welcomed the appointment, calling it “the voice of change that could not be ignored.”
Zelensky praised Syrskyi for his role in defending Kyiv during the opening days of Russia’s 2022 invasion.
He also revealed he had offered Fedorov “a worthy position in power,” although it remains unclear whether he will accept.
The leadership changes come as Ukraine faces mounting pressure to improve military performance, reform procurement and expand drone capabilities.
For many Ukrainians, replacing Syrskyi may ease political tensions.
But whether the reshuffle restores public confidence will likely depend less on new appointments—and more on results on the battlefield.
