President Donald Trump has officially unveiled a lavish new Boeing 747-8 that will serve as the next Air Force One.
But the aircraft’s journey to the presidential fleet is almost as remarkable as the jet itself.
The plane, donated by the government of Qatar and valued at roughly $400 million, has undergone extensive military upgrades before being cleared for service.
Now, after months of modifications, it is preparing for final test flights before carrying the US president.
Standing at Joint Base Andrews, Trump described the aircraft as a “flying White House,” praising its luxury features and craftsmanship.
“The workmanship of this plane is unbelievable,” he said, while thanking Qatar’s emir for the gift.
Deal Sparks Ethics Debate
But the jet has not escaped controversy. When news of the donation first emerged, critics from both major political parties questioned.
Whether accepting such an expensive gift created ethical concerns.
The White House has maintained that the arrangement is legal.
It says the aircraft will eventually be transferred to Trump’s presidential library after he leaves office.
Behind the polished exterior, the Air Force says the real transformation is technological.

Security systems, communications equipment and mission-support capabilities have all been upgraded.
While officials insist any potential security risks from the aircraft’s previous ownership have been eliminated.
For now, the jet represents both luxury and politics—a reminder that even an airplane can spark debate long before it leaves the runway.
