What began as a picture-perfect ride through New York’s iconic Central Park ended in tragedy.
An 18-year-old tourist from India has died after falling from a horse-drawn carriage in an accident.
That is now reigniting a long-running debate over the safety of the city’s famous carriage rides.
According to police, the teenager was travelling with three others when the carriage driver reportedly stepped away to take a photograph.
Moments later, the horse suddenly bolted. Video footage shows the carriage colliding with another vehicle before overturning, throwing passengers into chaos.
The young man suffered critical injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he later died.
The other passengers escaped without needing medical treatment.
Accident Sparks Safety Debate
Transportation union official Alexander Kemp described the incident as deeply troubling.
“A driver is not supposed to leave the carriage to take photos — ever,” he said, backing calls for a full investigation.
The accident comes just days after a carriage horse named Deniz died in Central Park after reportedly consuming a toxic plant, adding fresh scrutiny to the industry.

Critics argue the incidents highlight wider safety and animal welfare concerns.
Local politicians renewed calls for Ryder’s Law, a proposal that would gradually phase out horse-drawn carriage rides in New York.
For many, the question is becoming harder to ignore: are these historic carriage rides a cherished tradition?
Or a tradition whose time has finally run out?
