France Convicts Man After Pit Bull Kills Pregnant Girlfriend

Man convicted in France after pit bull killed pregnant girlfriend.

A tragic dog attack that shocked France has finally reached a legal conclusion.

But the case continues to raise difficult questions about responsibility, dangerous animals, and accountability.

A court in the northern French town of Soissons has convicted 51-year-old Christophe Ellul of involuntary manslaughter.

The court determined that his illegally imported pit bull fatally attacked his pregnant girlfriend, Elisa Pilarski, in 2019.

The court handed Ellul a four-year suspended sentence and ordered the dog, Curtis, to be euthanised.

Pilarski, who was six months pregnant at the time, was walking Curtis in a forest when the attack occurred.

Case Raises Safety Debate

Investigators found that she had called Ellul shortly before her death, saying she had been bitten and could no longer control the dog.

For years, Ellul maintained that hunting hounds in the area were responsible.

However, extensive DNA testing told a different story.

Authorities examined samples from 62 hunting dogs and five other dogs owned by the couple, ultimately concluding that Curtis was the sole attacker.

The case has also sparked an emotional debate among animal welfare advocates.

Curtis, now more than eight years old, has spent over six years in a kennel while legal proceedings unfolded.

A petition calling for the dog to be spared has gathered more than 80,000 signatures.

Yet the court’s decision underscores a stark reality: when ownership, training, and public safety collide, the consequences can be irreversible.
