Iran Sentences Nobel Peace Laureate Mohammadi To Prison

Iran sentences Nobel peace laureate to six years in prison.

Tehran is back in the headlines—and once again, it’s over the fate of a well-known dissident.

This time, it’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi.

An Iranian court has sentenced the 53-year-old activist to six years in prison on charges of “gathering and collusion to commit crimes.” Her lawyer Mostafa Nili confirmed.

On top of that, she received an additional 18 months for what authorities call “propaganda activities.”

A two-year travel ban, and two years of internal exile in eastern Iran.

Under Iranian law, the sentences will run at the same time.

Mohammadi’s Defiance Continues

Mohammadi has spent decades challenging Iran’s most sensitive policies—campaigning against the death penalty and the compulsory hijab.

That activism has come at a steep personal cost.

She has spent much of the past ten years behind bars and hasn’t seen her twin children, who live in Paris, since 2015.

Her lawyer hopes her serious health issues could lead to a temporary release.

“We are seeking bail so she can receive treatment,” Nili said, noting the ruling can still be appealed.

Released briefly last year on medical grounds, Mohammadi didn’t go quiet—and that may be the point.

In Iran, speaking out can win global praise, but at home, it often comes with a prison sentence attached.
