Madagascar Erupts Over Appointment Of General As PM

Madagascar protesters scorn move to name general as PM.

Madagascar’s president thought a new prime minister might calm the storm — but the streets of Antananarivo aren’t buying it.

After weeks of deadly protests, President Andry Rajoelina appointed Major General Ruphin Fortunat Dimbisoa.

Zafisambo is the new prime minister. He hoped to project control.

But for many, the move felt more like a power play than a peace offering.

“The president wants to show this is military power,” said Princia Rakotontraibe, a young medical intern.

She joined Tuesday’s demonstrations.

The unrest, which began on September 25 over chronic power and water cuts, has now spiraled into a wider anti-government movement.

Protests Persist After Cabinet Ousted

The UN says at least 22 people have died, though local officials dispute that number.

Rajoelina already dismissed his entire cabinet last week, but protesters say they want real accountability — not reshuffling.

Leading the charge is Gen Z Mada, a coalition of youth-led groups demanding a public apology for police violence.

They are threatening a nationwide strike if the government fails to act by Wednesday night.

Rajoelina, meanwhile, has invited the public to a meeting at the presidential palace.

The move feels less like dialogue and more like damage control.

A new general at the helm, but the people? Still unconvinced.
