El Capitan, Yosemite’s towering granite wall, has claimed another life—this time that of 23-year-old Alaskan climber and TikTok influencer Balin Miller.
His fatal fall on Wednesday was even more shocking because it happened mid-livestream.
Miller, known online as the “Orange Tent Guy” for his trademark campsite at El Capitan’s base, wasn’t a novice thrill-seeker.
He was a world-class alpinist who had stunned the climbing world with daring feats.
One of them was the first solo ascent of Mount McKinley’s brutal Slovak Direct in just 56 hours.
Veteran climbers hailed him as “one of the most impressive” athletes of his generation.
Some even compared him to free-solo legend Alex Honnold.
What Happened?
On Wednesday, though, something went wrong.
Witnesses said Miller was rope-soloing the infamous Sea of Dreams route and was hauling up gear when his rope likely ran out during a rappel.
“My heart is shattered in a million pieces,” his mother wrote in a heartbreaking tribute.
His brother Dylan said Miller was focused and disciplined—“not reckless, just pushing limits.”

The tragedy comes during a government shutdown that has left Yosemite with limited operations, but park rangers still rushed to respond.
Miller’s death is the park’s third climbing-related fatality this year.
A fearless climber who lived life on the edge—Miller’s fall leaves the climbing world asking.
