South African Ambassador Found Dead Outside Paris Hotel

South African ambassador found dead outside hotel in Paris.

A tragic scene unfolded in Paris this week: South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, was found dead outside his hotel.

The 58-year-old diplomat, a veteran politician and close ally of former president Jacob Zuma, had been staying on the 22nd floor.

According to prosecutors, the secured window in his room was forced open.

His body was discovered just below the hotel. Investigators have launched a probe.

A source close to the case noted Mthethwa had struggled with depression, raising the possibility of suicide.

His wife had alerted authorities the night before after receiving a “worrying message” from him.

Shock Across The Nation

Mthethwa’s sudden death has left South Africa reeling.

President Cyril Ramaphosa called it “a moment of deep grief.”

He described the ambassador as a man who “served our nation in diverse capacities during a lifetime.”

That lifetime “has ended prematurely and traumatically.”

Before his diplomatic post, Mthethwa held key cabinet positions, including minister of police, arts and culture, and later sports.

He became ambassador in December 2023, stepping into a new chapter of public service.

Now, instead of representing South Africa abroad, his name will be remembered under a cloud of sorrow.

And with many unanswered questions about his final hours.

Sometimes, even the most seasoned leaders carry battles no title can shield them from.
