US Pilot Released After Detention At Chilean Antarctic Base

US pilot and influencer released from Chilean air base in Antarctica.

A 20-year-old American pilot and social media influencer, Ethan Guo, is finally free.

He spent two months detained at a Chilean air base in Antarctica.

His crime? Allegedly landing his small Cessna without permission on Chilean-claimed territory.

Guo, who set out at 19 to become the youngest person to fly solo across all seven continents while raising $1 million for cancer research.

He hit a major snag when Chilean authorities accused him of filing a false flight plan.

He had told officials he’d fly over Punta Arenas.

Instead, he landed on King George Island, a remote outpost home to international research stations.

What’s The Penalty?

A $30,000 “donation” to childhood cancer research, a three-year ban from Chilean territory, and an order to leave the country immediately.

His lawyer, Jaime Barrientos Ramírez, told CBS News: “Of course, we do not agree with the legal process opened against him.

But it has already been closed with a type of dismissal.”

Guo, according to his attorney, is “doing pretty well” and still hopes to finish his record-setting journey once he’s back in the air.

So, what’s next for the young pilot?

A $30,000 lighter wallet and a bruised travel record.

But perhaps an even stronger story to tell when he finally completes his sky-high mission.
