Prisoner Escapes French Jail Hidden In Cellmate’s Bag

Prisoner in France escapes in his cellmate’s bag.

Ever heard of a jailbreak involving a laundry bag?

That’s exactly how one inmate slipped out of a French prison this weekend — and straight into headlines.

At the Corbas prison near Lyon, a man pulled off an audacious escape by hiding inside his cellmate’s laundry bag.

The catch? That cellmate was being released after completing his sentence. Prison officials didn’t notice anything amiss until the next morning.

“It’s a first in our administration,” admitted Sébastien Cauwel, France’s prison director, to BFMTV. “A series of serious failures led to this.”

Where Did He Go?

The escape didn’t last long. By Monday morning, the fugitive was found leaving a cellar in Sathonay-Camp, just outside Lyon.

His alleged accomplice is still on the run.

Authorities say the escapee now faces fresh charges tied to organized crime and criminal conspiracy.

Cauwel also pointed to a deeper issue: overcrowding.

Corbas is operating at 170% capacity, complicating the jobs of prison staff and potentially allowing incidents like this to happen.

This isn’t France’s first prison embarrassment.

Last year, a gang ambushed a prison convoy to free another inmate, “The Fly,” who was later recaptured in Romania.

Laundry bag escapes? Overcrowded cells? France’s prison system may need more than just new locks.
