Microsoft Claims New AI Diagnoses Better Than Real Doctors

Microsoft says AI system better than doctors at diagnosing complex health conditions.

Imagine an AI system so sharp it diagnoses tough medical cases better than a panel of doctors. Sound like science fiction?

Microsoft says it’s already happening.

Their AI unit is led by DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman.

It has developed a tool that mimics expert medical teams tackling real-world, complex cases.

And when paired with OpenAI’s powerful o3 model?

It correctly solved over 80% of the diagnostic challenges—cases that stumped actual physicians, who only managed a 20% success rate.

How It Works?

Microsoft’s “diagnostic orchestrator” takes a clinical approach—asking questions, ordering tests.

It narrows down possibilities just like a real doctor.

The tech was tested using over 300 intricate case studies from the New England Journal of Medicine, and the results were staggering.

Suleyman believes we’re less than a decade away from near-flawless performance.

“These systems will be almost error-free within 5 to 10 years,” he told The Guardian.

But Microsoft is quick to clarify—it’s not replacing doctors. It’s helping them.

“Doctors do more than diagnose,” the company noted. “They build trust and navigate ambiguity—things AI isn’t designed to do.”

Still, one thing’s clear: the stethoscope just met its smartest assistant yet. Ready or not, medical superintelligence is knocking.
