Uber Fast-Tracks Driverless Taxi Trials In UK

Uber brings forward trialling driverless taxis in UK.

Uber is gearing up to test robotaxis in London next spring—think autonomous cars, zero human drivers, just you and the machine.

Partnering with UK-based AI firm Wayve, Uber’s taking this bold leap into the future of transport.

Wayve’s been quietly testing these self-driving rides on London’s bustling streets.

For now, there’s always a human in the driver’s seat, just in case.

That’s because UK law doesn’t fully allow fully driverless rides yet… but that’s changing.

Originally, the UK aimed for autonomous vehicles by 2026, then pushed it to 2027.

What Comes Next?

The government’s fast-tracking trials for small-scale autonomous services like robotaxis.

Uber’s still figuring out if these trial rides will be open to customers.

They’re determined to make it a regular option once the green light’s official.

And while officials predict 38,000 jobs and £42 billion for the UK economy by 2035, not everyone’s cheering.

“We can’t ignore the social impact,” says GMB union’s Andy Prendergast, pointing to possible job losses.

Still, the tech looks promising. A recent trial in London handled traffic, cyclists, even pedestrians on crutches—flawlessly.

If anything, it drove too cautiously.

The future of London cabs? It might just be nobody driving you home.
