DeepSeek, a Chinese AI app, has skyrocketed to the top of Apple’s App Store rankings in the US, UK, and China, overtaking ChatGPT and other competitors.
Since its January debut, the app has challenged the idea of America’s dominance in AI.
Chatbot Developed For Just $6 Million
Powered by the open-source DeepSeek-V3 model, the app’s creators claim it was developed for under $6 million—a fraction of what rivals spend.
But not everyone in the AI world is buying this claim.
Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen even called it “AI’s Sputnik moment,” likening it to the Soviet Union’s game-changing satellite launch in 1957.
Move Could Shake Up The World
Despite US restrictions on advanced chip exports to China, DeepSeek’s team has thrived by pooling resources and creating models that need fewer chips.
AI analyst Fiona Cincotta added that the low-cost approach could shake up profits for companies like Nvidia and Microsoft.
