Russia and Ukraine swapped over 300 prisoners of war on Monday in a deal brokered by the UAE.
This marks another chapter in a series of exchanges since the war began in February 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine.
Russia & Ukraine Confirms The Deal
Russia’s defense ministry confirmed that 150 of its soldiers were returned in exchange for 150 Ukrainian prisoners.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his side had secured the release of 189 individuals.
The released prisoners included soldiers, border guards, and two civilians from Russian-occupied Mariupol.
“We are committed to freeing everyone in Russian captivity,” Zelensky said, emphasizing Ukraine’s determination to bring its people home.
Since the start of the conflict, Ukraine claims it has successfully negotiated the release of nearly 4,000 captives.
Videos shared by Russia’s human rights commissioner captured the moment soldiers reunited with their compatriots, bundled in winter gear and awaiting buses.
