President-elect Donald Trump’s Surgeon General pick, Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, is believed to have accidentally shot her father, as reported by the New York Times.
At just 13, Nesheiwat accidentally caused a gun to fire while searching for scissors in her family’s Florida home in February 1990.
A .380 caliber handgun fell from a tackle box, discharging and fatally striking her sleeping father, Ziad “Ben” Nesheiwat, in the head.
Nesheiwat Never Revealed This Before
“I saw blood on my father’s ear,” she told police at the time, as reported by The New York Times.
Her father was declared dead the next day, and the shooting was ruled an accident.
While Nesheiwat has spoken about the trauma of losing her father, she has never publicly disclosed her role in the incident.
In her 2017 memoir, Beyond the Stethoscope, she describes witnessing her father’s death as the catalyst for her medical journey.
The nomination is considered controversial for democrats who have been advising Trump to seek merit over personal loyalty.
