TikTok is stepping up efforts to address mental health concerns by restricting beauty filters for users under 18.
Soon, teens won’t be able to use filters that enlarge eyes, plump lips, or alter skin tone, to curb unrealistic beauty standards, The Guardian reports.
Funny Filters Will Remain
The social media platform said the funny filters like bunny ears or dog noses will remain available.
The move comes after widespread criticism that appearance-altering filters negatively impact young users’ self-esteem, particularly girls.
TikTok’s report was created with Internet Matters and highlights concerns from teens and parents over filters that blur the line between real and edited images.
TikTok To Use AI To Detect Under 13
Additionally, TikTok is tightening age restrictions, trialing AI technology to detect users under 13, and removing six million accounts monthly.
The company said those flagged by the system can appeal if they believe their accounts were wrongfully deleted.
