In contrast to what the Republican party leaders have been saying for years, the crime rate has gone down drastically in 2023.
The latest data released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation maintained that the violent crime rate declined by 3%, a significant one-year decline in the last two decades.
The crime rate has been a rallying point for the GOP leading nominee Donald Trump who has been accusing Joe Biden of skyrocketing crime rate.
FBI Report Data
The FBI’s annual Crime in the Nation report also highlighted decreases in several other key crime categories.
Rape fell by an estimated 9.4%, property crime was down by 2.4%, and burglary saw a 7.6% decline.
However, car theft surged by 12.6%, and shoplifting returned to pre-pandemic levels, rising from nearly 1 million reported cases in 2022 to 1.15 million in 2023.
The FBI emphasized that its estimates include comprehensive data from every city with a population of one million or more.
