Scientists Explain Why Billions of Crabs Vanished From Alaska

Scientists and marine experts were shocked when billions of crabs went missing from the Bering Sea in 2022.

But now, scientists believe that they have identified the cause of the mystery.

Researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that the warm and ice-free conditions in the sea led billions of crabs to starve to death.

Climate Change To Blame

Scientists pointed fingers at the adverse effects of human-induced climate change that caused billions of precious species to die.

Researchers noted that the Bering Sea, once known for its cold, icy waters, is experiencing increasingly warm years.

Snow crabs usually thrive in waters below 2 degrees Celsius and have been severely impacted by the transformation of the sea, researchers claimed.

Michael Litzow, lead author of the study warned that “we should anticipate many more [very warm] years,” in the future as our planet gets more and more warmer with time.
