Germany is currently facing a wave of spying threats from Russia and China, with several arrests made in the past few months linking them to the two countries.
Lawmakers and military officials are increasingly concerned about espionage carried out by politicians, businesses and academics.
Just this month alone, Germany has arrested six suspected spies working for the Chinese government with two figures from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
A Very Serious And Real Threat
The Parliamentary Control Committee for the Intelligence Services and lawmaker Konstantin von Notz told DW that the issue was of serious nature.
He said China is using academics and businesses to recruit people and send them to Germany to collect critical information.
“With every joint venture and every direct investment, managers and other personnel from China come to Germany,” he said.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Germany has expelled 40 people linked to the Russian embassy over espionage.
