174 People Finally Rescued From Stranded Cable Cars in Turkey

The last of the 174 who were stranded in cable cars above a mountain in southern Turkey have been successfully rescued after nearly 23 hours.

The rescue follows a terrible situation when one person died and nearly 200 were stranded in midair when a pylon supporting cable cars collapsed outside the Turkish resort city of Antalya on 12 April.

Turkey Announces Completion of Rescue

The Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced the completion of the rescue operation when the last group of 43 people were rescued.

The extensive rescue effort involved 607 search and rescue personnel and 10 helicopters from various agencies, including Turkey’s emergency response agency Afad, the coast guard, and firefighting teams.

Investigation Initiated

An investigation into the incident has been initiated by the Antalya chief public prosecutor’s office, with a commission of experts tasked to determine the cause of the accident.

Thirteen individuals, including cable car company managers, have been detained as part of this investigation, according to Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc.
