NASA is training a robot dog to teach it how to walk on the surface of the moon.
NASA’s diverse team of researchers, including engineers, planetary scientists, and cognitive scientists, deployed a robot named Spirit in Oregon’s Mount Hood at 6,000 feet, on challenging snowy and rocky terrain.
LASSIE
The initiative, known as Legged Autonomous Surface Science in Analog Environments (LASSIE), aims to equip the robot with the ability to adapt in a real-time moon environment.
The ultimate objective of the robot is to explore the Moon’s surface and potentially other celestial bodies in the future.
Spirit has already demonstrated its capabilities across various terrains, from California beaches to the icy slopes of Mount Hood, Futurism reported.
NASA Awarded The Team
NASA awarded the team a $2 million grant over two years to aid in delivering robots to the Moon’s surface.
The LASSIE team is now planning to release the robot at White Sands National Park in New Mexico, after which the robot will be ready to set its foot on the surface of the moon.
