The United States military is slashing thousands of posts in order to restructure the entire force and prepare for major future wars.
The Associated Press has reported that the military has already slashed 24,000, or almost 5% of its force, to be able to prepare in other crucial warfare tactics.
Cuts To Target Empty Posts
The news reports suggest that the Pentagon is focusing on posts that are already empty or those that are not required at the moment.
The cuts will mainly be in already-empty posts but will not impact soldiers.
The objective is to reduce counterinsurgency jobs because they are not needed at the moment.
Moving Away From Terrorism
Army Secretary Christine Wormuth told reporters on Tuesday that the United States is moving away from counterterrorism operations and focusing more on large-scale wars.
Over the years, the military’s focus has shifted from non-state actors to countries such as China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea, Wormuth said.
