A Senator from the US House of Senate has said that Chinese garlic is a security threat.
The Republican senator Rick Scott wrote to the government to investigate the potential impact of Chinese garlic imports.
He has raised several public health concerns about the quality and safety of Chinese garlic.
Senator Highlights Unsafe Growing Practices
The senator told the commerce secretary that imported garlic, specifically from communist China, was dangerous for health.
He referred to online material on the subject, proving China’s unsafe production and growing procedures.
He said some growers in China were using human waste to grow garlic.
No Evidence
The Office for Science and Society at McGill University in Quebec said there was no evidence to prove the senator’s claim.
“Human waste is as effective a fertilizer as is animal waste.
Spreading human sewage on fields that grow crops doesn’t sound appealing, but it is safer than you might think.” it said.
