The military rulers of Niger have asked for help from the Russian mercenary Wagner group, as per the latest media reports. The plea for the Russian private military group by Niger’s military rulers came at a time when Africa’s regional block is thinking of military intervention in the country to restore the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum.
Niger Ended Cooperation With France
Immediately after taking over the country, Niger new rulers ended all sort of cooperation with the former colonial power France. The French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna vowed to support West African regional bloc ECOWAS. Colonna met with Niger Prime Minister Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou to restore back power to the Niger president.
Niger Coup Leaders Sought Russian Help
In response to the threats posed by regional bloc members, the Niger ruling generals have asked for help from the Russian private military group Wagner to protect it against possible intervention by regional countries, including France.
