A survey has revealed a drastic drop in homicide rate in the US while the car theft rate has increased across 30 major cities. The survey, conducted by the Council on Criminal Justice showed a 10% decrease in the murder rate for 10 violent, property and drug offenses.
20 Cities Reported Decline
Based on the data, 20 major cities showed a 9% decrease in the first half of 2023, but have stayed elevated as compared to 2019. Gun assaults and residential burglaries showed 6% and 4% decline respectively, while nonresidential burglaries declined by 5%, according to the data.
Car Theft Increased in 23 Cities
While gun assaults showed encouraging signs, car theft continued to spike across 23 major cities. The survey revealed that motor vehicle thefts skyrocketed by 34% as compared to 2022.
