Cyprus becomes an island of dead cats after a virus outbreak kills more than 300,000 cats. Experts are suggesting that both stray and domestic cats are at risk of dying due to feline infectious peritonitis, a coronavirus strain that infects cats.
Island of Cats At Risk Of Losing Cats
Cyprus, a country also referred to as the island of cats, is now at risk of losing its cat population after the latest virus outbreak in January. People in the country have noticed a decline in the population of cats, with many reporting dead cats in the streets. Dinos Agiomamitis, head of the Cats PAWS Cyprus, said as far as the official estimates are concerned, Cyprus has lost more than 300,000 cats since the outbreak in January.
Domestic Cats Quarantined
Local clinics in Cyprus have quarantined domestic cats in order to save them until the outbreak slows down. Dr Dinos said controlling the spread of the virus is almost impossible because the population of stray cats has been overwhelming.
