Taiwan has received its first two new F-16V fighter jets from the United States, strengthening an air force.
That regularly scrambles to monitor Chinese military activity nearby.
The aircraft arrived at Taitung’s Chihhang Air Base on Friday, after months of production delays linked partly to software problems.
They are the first of 66 jets ordered under an $8 billion US deal approved in 2019.
So why has the delivery taken so long?
The new F-16Vs feature upgraded radar, avionics and weapons systems designed to improve Taiwan’s ability to counter advanced aircraft.
These include China’s J-20 stealth fighters. Once the full order arrives, Taiwan’s F-16 fleet will exceed 200 aircraft.
More Jets Expected This Year
Defence Minister Wellington Koo said more jets are expected before the end of the year, adding, “Of course we won’t only have delivered these two by year-end.”
Taiwan says the military threat from Beijing continues to grow. Koo stressed that China’s intention “to annex Taiwan by force has never changed.”
Washington is legally required to provide Taiwan with defensive capabilities.

Beijing has repeatedly demanded that the US stop supplying weapons to the island.
The latest arrivals therefore represent more than just new aircraft.
They add another layer to an already tense military balance.
And raise the question of how much stronger Taiwan’s air defences can become before Beijing reacts.
