A Russian drone struck a train near Ukraine’s border with Poland.
This happened just after former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and senior European security officials had travelled along the same railway.
No one was injured. The drone hit the locomotive at Yahodyn, about 2km from the Polish border, and passengers were evacuated shortly before the attack.
Why does the location matter? Johnson and officials including the UK’s Jonathan Powell had recently passed through on another train.
They had attended a security conference in Kyiv.
Former CIA chief David Petraeus, who was nearby, called the strike “terrifying” and described it as an attempt to “terrorize Ukrainian civilians.”
War Nears Poland’s Border
Russia said it targeted railway infrastructure. Ukraine’s railway operator, however, suggested the diplomatic train may have been the real target.
Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt said passengers on his train were ordered to prepare for evacuation before being cleared to continue into Poland.
Johnson called the strike “random and senseless” and urged allies to provide Ukraine with more air defences.
Ukrainian officials warned that Russian attacks are increasingly reaching transport routes and border areas.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the escalation was “getting closer and closer to our border.”
