After a passenger ferry capsized off northern Cyprus, triggering a major search-and-rescue operation.
The vessel was carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members when it ran into trouble shortly after leaving Kyrenia for Turkey.
According to Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, the ship was struck by two waves.
As the captain tried to recover from the first, a second wave hit and the ferry began taking on water.
What went wrong? That is now the central question.
The captain and seven crew members have been detained while authorities investigate whether negligence played any role.
Helicopters and coastguard vessels rushed to the scene, while ambulances waited along the shore.
Rescue Efforts Continue
About 100 passengers were reportedly brought safely to land, although the nationalities of those aboard and the number of injured remain unclear.
The 40-metre Filo Jet later sank completely, according to Transport Minister Erhan Arıklı.
Survivors were seen wearing life jackets and sitting on the overturned hull before rescue teams reached them.
Üstel promised a full investigation, saying “even the slightest negligence will be uncovered” and that no one responsible would be spared.
For now, families can only wait as rescuers race against time to find those still missing.
