How do you measure the life of someone who made the impossible look routine?
The mountaineering world is mourning after renowned British-Nepali climber Nirmal Purja, known as “Nims,” was killed in an avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak.
Alongside him, nine other climbers were also killed.
His company, Elite Expeditions, confirmed the tragedy with “profound sadness and immense heartbreak,” while his brother wrote, “We will miss you every single day.”
Pakistan has already recovered several bodies, and Nepal’s Prime Minister paid tribute to Purja’s extraordinary courage and lasting legacy.
Purja’s Climbing Legacy Lives On
Purja became a global icon in 2019 after climbing all 14 mountains above 8,000 metres in just 189 days, shattering the previous record.
His achievement later reached millions through the documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.
A former British Army Gurkha and Special Forces soldier, he spent years pushing the limits of human endurance.
Ironically, Broad Peak wasn’t even part of his original plan.
Days before the expedition, he wrote that the climb could bring him within one summit of becoming the first person to climb all 14 eight-thousanders twice without supplemental oxygen.
It would leave him just one summit away from achieving that milestone.
“Opportunities don’t scream,” he reflected. “They whisper.”
For a man who spent his life conquering the world’s highest peaks, his legacy now rises even higher than the mountains he climbed.
