How does a doctor entrusted with easing suffering become a convicted killer?
That disturbing question now hangs over one of Germany’s most shocking medical crime cases.
A Berlin court has sentenced a 41-year-old palliative care doctor, identified only as Johannes M., to life in prison for murdering 15 patients between 2021 and 2024.
The victims, aged 25 to 94, were seriously ill but not believed to be close to death.
Prosecutors said the doctor secretly administered lethal drug combinations during home visits without consent.
In several cases, prosecutors said the doctor set fires to destroy evidence.
Investigators believe the case may be far bigger.
Doctor Admits Killing Patients
Authorities are now examining 76 additional deaths that could be linked to the doctor.
The possibility of one of Germany’s largest serial murder investigations is being raised.
After remaining silent for much of the year-long trial, Johannes M. admitted to killing 12 patients, claiming he believed he was ending their suffering.

“Throughout it all, I thought this was the best thing for everyone,” he told the court before apologising.
But relatives rejected that justification. She never said she didn’t want to live anymore,” said the mother of one victim.
Another family member recalled his mother was still making future travel plans.
The court also imposed a lifetime medical ban, underscoring a painful truth: compassion without consent is not care—it’s a crime.
