117 Dead Dogs Found At California No-Kill Animal Rescue

Investigators search for animal remains as part of an active investigation into alleged animal cruelty, fraud and theft in Fortuna, California.

What was supposed to be a safe haven for abandoned dogs has turned into a deeply disturbing investigation.

Authorities in northern California say they have uncovered the remains of 117 dogs at a sanctuary.

The sanctuary described itself as a “no-kill” rescue, and many had apparent gunshot wounds.

Investigators excavating the 50-acre property also found 21 dog skulls, hundreds of bones, and around 600 dog collars.

X-rays of 70 recovered bodies revealed bullet fragments, while officials believe a barn on the site may have been where many of the animals were killed.

The investigation began after allegations of animal cruelty and fraud surfaced.

Animal Rescue Under Investigation

According to Sheriff William Honsal, the shelter accepted roughly 900 animals this year.

But recorded only 116 adoptions, leaving more than 700 animals unaccounted for.

Owner Shannon Miranda has denied wrongdoing.

She insisted the rescue only euthanized animals in rare cases involving terminal illness or serious danger.

He has urged the public to “consider all the facts before reaching conclusions.”

Authorities stress the case remains active, with no criminal charges filed yet.

As microchips are analyzed and evidence reviewed, investigators say the truth is still unfolding.

For now, the biggest question remains: How did a place meant to save lives end up at the center of such a heartbreaking mystery?
