What if losing your job to AI… was actually your way back in?
Across Shanghai, a quiet shift is underway. Young professionals—many worried about the so-called “curse of 35”—are ditching traditional careers.
And launching “one-person companies.” No big teams. No offices. Just them… and AI doing most of the heavy lifting.
“The one-person company is a product of the AI era,” says Karen Dai, who runs meetups for solo founders.
Tasks that once required entire departments? Now handled by smart tools in minutes.

Take Wang Tianyi. At 26, he quit his corporate job and now earns thousands monthly creating AI-generated ads.
His prediction? “Flying solo will become a major trend.”
AI Reshapes Careers
Why now? Because of an invisible deadline. Turn 35 in China’s competitive job market, and opportunities can shrink fast.
“There’s like this invisible line,” Dai explains. “Companies start asking who should stay.”
So instead of waiting to be replaced, many are adapting early. Some, like Wei Xin, even saw AI coming for their roles—and pivoted before it hit.
“If I don’t approach it,” she admits, “I might soon be eliminated.”
The government is backing this shift too, offering funding and incentives for these AI-powered solo ventures.
So here’s the twist: AI isn’t just taking jobs—it’s reshaping them. The real question is… will you compete with it, or build with it?
