So, did Florida just bring the Ukraine war closer to an ending? Maybe—but not quite yet.
Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met at Mar-a-Lago and came away sounding optimistic.
Progress was made, they said. A full breakthrough? Not so fast.
As Trump put it, peace is “getting closer,” but some of the hardest questions are still hanging in the air.
One big development: security guarantees. Zelensky revealed that the US has floated protection for Ukraine lasting 15 years.
Trump claimed that part of the deal is “95%” done.
Ukraine Seeks Guarantees
Kyiv, however, is pushing for guarantees stretching up to 50 years. Why the urgency?
As one European official put it, Ukraine wants assurances that are “ironclad,” not temporary.
Then there’s the elephant in the room: Donbas. Russia controls most of the region and wants all of it.
Ukraine isn’t budging easily. “This issue remains unresolved,” Trump admitted, even as he hinted talks were narrowing the gap.

Trump also teased possible trilateral talks with Russia “at the right time,” while warning that failed negotiations could mean the war drags on.
Zelensky believes a deal is 90% ready—but insists Ukrainians should have the final say through a referendum.
Peace, it seems, is close enough to touch. The question is: will anyone blink first?
