A devastating fire tore through a general store in northern Mexico, killing at least 23 people and injuring 11 others, officials confirmed Saturday.
The blaze broke out at a Waldo’s discount chain outlet in Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora state, leaving the city in shock.
Governor Alfonso Durazo called it a tragedy that has brought “deep sadness among all the people of Sonora.”
Among the victims were men, women, and several children, according to the Mexican Red Cross.
“It’s a heartbreaking scene,” said Red Cross president Carlos Freaner, who confirmed that twelve women and four children were among the dead.
Fire Devastates Hermosillo
President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences, saying her “heart goes out to the families and loved ones” of those who lost their lives.
She ordered federal aid teams to support the victims and their relatives.
Authorities have ruled out foul play for now. The Sonora Public Security Secretariat said the fire was not an act of arson or deliberate attack.

It gave no further details about what sparked the deadly blaze.
In a city used to desert heat, few expected fire to bring such tragedy.
For Hermosillo’s grieving families, Saturday’s flames have left scars that will burn for years to come.
