Open Google Maps in the U.S., and you might do a double take—the Gulf of Mexico is now labeled the Gulf of America.
This change, rolled out by Google on Monday, follows an executive order from President Donald Trump.
The order mandated the new name as part of his effort to “restore names that honor American Greatness.”
Mexican Government is Not Happy
The move has stirred controversy, with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum pushing back, arguing that the U.S. has no legal authority to rename an international body of water.
“This is not just a name—it’s history, geography, and international law,” she stated, citing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Google Defended The Move
Google defended the update, saying it aligns with its longstanding policy of following official government sources.
But not everyone is on board.
The Associated Press, a major news agency, announced it will not recognize the new name, sticking with “Gulf of Mexico” in its reporting.
The White House responded by barring an AP journalist from covering an event, escalating tensions further.
