Elon Musk‘s lottery-style giveaway of $1 million per day to registered voters has raised legal concerns, according to US media reports.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) sent a letter to Musk’s political action committee, America PAC, warning that this contest may be illegal under federal election laws.
Elon Musk’s Giveaways Are Illegal
The giveaway, which is tied to signing a petition supporting the First and Second Amendments, could potentially violate laws prohibiting payments to individuals for registering to vote.
Kalama Harris’ running mate Tim Walz recently compared Elon Musk spending millions to buying an election.
Legal experts do believe that such giveaways that can influence electoral outcomes can sway public opinion.
Adav Noti from the Campaign Legal Center told the BBC that “It is illegal to give out money on the condition that recipients register as voters.”
It is not clear how the DOJ might respond if Elon Musk continued with his practice of millions in giveaways in rallies, but this could endanger Trump’s campaign.
