For the very first time, SpaceX launched the first batch of operational spy satellites for a U.S. intelligence network to enhance the country’s space-based surveillance capabilities.
The launch marks the beginning of several planned deployments this year, followed by construction of hundreds of satellites for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), an intelligence agency.
Satellites Are Crucial For Defense
Space.com revealed that these satellites will form a comprehensive orbital system designed to quickly identify ground targets worldwide.
Neither the SpaceX nor the NRO provide any details about the destination or an expected time of arrival of these satellites.
The NRO stated that approximately six launches are planned for 2024 to support this new system, with additional launches expected through 2028.
The reports revealed that the exact number of satellites deployed has not been disclosed by the agency.
